A rare case of uterine rupture and intra abdominal foetal escape in a cross bred cow

This paper reports a rare case of foetal escape to abdomen after uterine rupture of unknown origin in a cow, which was treated successfully.An 8-yr-old cross-bred cow was presented at its advanced stage of parturition, with inability to deliver the calf normally. The animal was active but anorexic, with increased body temperature (105°C), dyspnoea and restlessness. The case was diagnosed asdystocia from the history and symptoms but without any vaginal discharge. Per-rectal examination revealed floating of the foetus inside lower abdominal cavity without feeling of uterine horns. Presuming that the condition may be hydro-allantois or ascites, it was decided to go for exploratory laparotomy or/and caesarean section. The animal was administered intramuscularly with antipyretic (inj. Melonex plus), antibiotic (Intacef 3 g), and triflupromazine HC1 (1 mg/kg b.wt) as a tranquilizer. The surgical site was shaved, cleaned and prepared for laparotomy under local infiltration and epidural anaesthesia (Lidocaine 2%). The animal was given with fluid therapy with continuous drip.
