Effects of dietary manganese supplementation on selected biochemical characteristics and minerals in broiler breeder seminal plasma

Manganese (Mn), is a chain-breaking antioxidant in biological systems of all living animals. Mn deficiency affects reproduction performance in birds. However, little is known about its effects and the possible mechanism in regulating reproduction in male broiler breeder. Therefore, efforts were made to explore the role dietary Mn feeding on biochemical and trace elements in seminal plasma. In current study, twenty four male broiler breeders (51 week age) were divided into four groups containing 6 birds in each group (T1-control, T2, T3 and T4). These birds were fed with diets containing 120, 170, 220 and 270 ppm respectively in the form of manganese glycinate for 9 weeks duration. Results revealed that the supplementary Mn in the broiler breeder diet (T2, T3 and T4) resulted in significant (P<0.05) decrease in body weight, significant (P<0.05) increase in the seminal plasma cholesterol whereas total protein did not show any significant difference at 60th wk of age. Similarly, minerals (Ca, P, Zn and Cu) also showed a significant increase (P<0.05) in the seminal plasma level. Cell mediated immune response was significantly (P<0.05) increased in Mn supplemented groups. In conclusion, the suitable dietary Mn concentration of270 ppm is beneficial forimproving the biochemical (total protein and cholesterol) minerals and immune response status of broiler breeder seminal plasma along with fertility and hatchability.
