Economic benefits of Dendrocalamus strictus (Roxb.) Nees in Sadadapani village of Vankal Forest Range of Surat Forest Division, Gujarat India

摘要

In Gujarat state, two types of bamboo species i.e., Dendrocalamus strictus (Roxb.) Nees (Manvel) and Bambusa bambos L. Voss (Katas) are found (Tiwari, 1998). Out of these, D. strictus (Roxb.) Nees have strong, light and flexible woody culms which hasbeen used in preparation of various articles and as construction materials. According to National Mission on Bamboos Application (NMBA), the D. strictus (Roxb.) Nees is economically the most important species which is being used by "Kotvaliya" communityfor preparing bamboo articles and bamboo industries for paper pulp. The "Kotvaliya" communities do not possess land and their literacy rate is very less. Therefore, they are mainly dependent on bamboos for their livelihood.
