Fuel cells and their use e.g. in vehicles allow a reduction of primary energy consumption by a highly efficient drive technology. That includesdecreasing the dependence on the primary energy carrier oil and a local and - with the use of renewable energies -global lack of local emissions. Furthermore it is possible to store an excess supply of electricity (e.g. fluctuating generated renewable energy) in the form of hydrogen, which in turn can be used for fuel cell vehicles. However the complex manufacturing-process of fuel cells limits the possible use of large number of pieces so far. Therefore a current research objective is to reduce the production costs for fuel cell systems. During the last recent years a significant progress has been made.
