The present study is an attempt to assess the hepatoprotective potential of Kaempferia galanga rhizome extract through in vivo and in vitro models. Freshly powdered rhizomes of K. galanga were extracted with methanol and experiment was done on male wistar rats weighing between 150 - 200g. CCI_4 (2 mL/kg 50% in olive oil) was administered to animals for inducing hepatotoxicity. To study the in vivo hepatoprotection, extracts at two dose levels i.e. 100 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg orally, with the reference drug silymarin 25.0 mg/kg i.p were administered. Liver slice culture in vitro was used for the estimation of lactate dehydrogenase. After CCI_4 treatment, increase in the serum hepatic enzyme levels SGOT, SGPT, ALP and ACP were observed when compared with the control group. Decrease in the antioxidant enzyme levels were observed in the CCI_4 treated group which was significantly prevented with the treatment of KGRE and silymarin. In case of liver slices treated with CCl_4, more LDH in the medium was observed when compared to control group. Results suggest that Kaempferia galanga and its constituents have promising application in hepatoprotection.
