Japan, an island country lying off the east coast of Asia, consists of a great string of islands in a northeast-southwest arc that stretches for approximately 1,500 miles (2,400 km) through the western North Pacific ocean. The national capital, Tokyo,in east-central Honshu, is one of the world's most populous cities. Japan has ethnically homogeneous population.The Japanese landscape is rugged, with more than four-fifths of the land surface consisting of mountains. There are many active and dormant volcanoes, including Mount Fuji [ at an elevation of 12,388 feet [3,776 metres]. Abundant precipitation and mild temperatures throughout the country produced a lush vegetation cover.Japanese agriculture is characterized by a large number of small and often inefficient farms. Larger farms generally are found in Hokkaido, where units of 25 acres (10 hectares) or moreare fairly common. The country's principal crop is rice. Other important farm products include wheat, barley, potatoes, fruits, vegetables, and tea. The agricultural regions of Japan are characterized by low population densities.
