Studies have reported that a critical factor that influences the survival of dental implants is the anatomy and location of the jaw in which implants are placed.1"3 Type 4 bone (commonly found in the posterior maxilla) comprises a thin cortex and low trabecular density and is associated with an increased rate of implant failure.4 Studies5"8 have reported a 10% higher implant failure rate in the posterior maxilla compared with the mandible, This is possibly due to the fact that dental implants placed in the posterior maxilla undergo a higher compressive stress than do implants placed in the mandible.9 Furthermore, under several circumstances, the bone height may also be insufficient in the posterior maxilla for proper implant placement because of the presence of the maxillary sinus. In this regard, rehabilitation of posterior maxilla with dental implants is challenging.
