Research, Development and Airworthiness Certified Production of Aerospace Materials for Indian Defence

The advances in the past 2-3 decades in aerospace materials and technologies for the development of components, subsystems and major systems have been both voluminous and phenomenal1,2. The application areas of aerospace systems are also vast and wide ranged - Airframe, Engine, Propulsion, Refurbishment, Fuels, Lubricants, Coatings, Control & Guidance, and Stealth. Several advanced topics such as Fatigue & Fracture Based and Damage Tolerance Based Design, NDT, Failure Analysis, Structural Health Monitoring and Certification have become the subjects of several new major national projects for India's build-up and self-reliance. It is my fortune that I have had the opportunities to develop, characterise and aid in the certified production of aero materials for most of the aforementioned application areas for Indian Defence. I will elucidate on all these contributions in this special publication with an objective not only to provide insight on my own contributions, but also to provide, wherever possible, the contributions made by various national teams that I have been associated with in these activities; and also briefly comment on the present status and desired future course of actions in the following areas: (A) Scientific Research - Influence of Composition/Material Design, Processing, Thermal and/or Thermo-mechanical Treatments on Deformation, Fracture, Fatigue Design, Bilinearity in Fatigue Power-law Relationships, In-plane Anisotropy in Fatigue and Fracture Resistance and finally, Mixed-Mode Fracture.
