Automation and machine vision move closer together

Stemmer Imaging discusses how the two worlds of automation and machine vision can and must collaborate in order to be cost-effective. Machine vision has made an important contribution to industrial automation for many years, primarily by providing automated inspection capabilities as part of QC procedures in a host of industries. Further developments in the field of embedded vision have led to an even greater integration of the technology into other factory equipment. In the era of globalisation and Industry 4.0, the close connection of vision and automation technologies is going to become even more important for cost-effective automation. While there is now a general view that 'seeing' plants can do more than 'blind' plants in many branches of industry, the situation is becoming more complex. There are many innovative developments that present users and developers of vision systems with big challenges in the selection of the ideal components and subsystems for their respective application.
