Thematic 2019 Letter from the Editor

This year's thematic is the sixteenth of the Immunological Investigations' thematic issues, and is entitled, "Comparative and evolutionary aspects of tumor immunity". This issue was suggested by the editorial board last year. Since state of the art tumor therapeutic regimes increasingly involve stimulation of tumor immunity by blocking various areas of immune downregulation, the evolution of immunity to tumors is of renewed interest. Insight into the elegance of the immune system with its specificity, scope and ability to distinguish between self and non-self can be obtained by looking at the more evolutionarily primitive species. Thus, in this 16th thematic issue of Immunological Investigations, we focused on evolutionary models of tumor immunity where innate or adaptive immune system components play a role. As suggested by the title, this topic is intentionally broad in scope.
