The root of the AV ethics problem

As automated vehicles move from the realm of science fiction to what seems like a viable mainstream reality, a lot of the AV discussion has centered around ethics. Standard questions include, "How should a self-driving car respond to choosing between slamming into another vehicle and possibly injuring its occupants, or diverting off the road and possibly killing children who are nearby?"
