The old prospector: A Bulloo River character

I found him camped in a pleasant bend of the Bulloo River, between Emudilla and North Comongin. He was not a man of means, but strikingly independent and so it was not surprising to find him passingly handy in many ways. A mineral license and a miner's right among a package of soiled and crumpled papers indicated his profession; but he was an enthusiastic cobbler, tailor, and other things as well. Not that anybody else ever derived any benefit from his handiwork; on the contrary, his talents were solely devoted to his own selfish purposes.
