The authors welcome the comments raised by Dr. Look in relation to the paper published in the AGS special edition on expansive soils (Vol. 53 No. 1). The use of AS2870 in subgrade treatment for pavements has been the subject of considerable debate in South Australia and the intention of the paper is to outline an example of its application for the Darlington Upgrade Project and how it compares with other States' approach. The authors' response to the questions are presented below. Aside from the specificity of this project requirements to envelope possible movements, is a "2 level" active zone approach applicable for such projects?
