One of the most common reasons for positive displacement (PD) pump failure is over-pressurisation i.e. running the pump above rated pressure. It applies to all types of PD pumps - reciprocating, rotary et cetera. PD pumps will discharge the fluid at the pressure required by the supplying system. However, the system can often experience sudden pressure surges due to various causes such as a shut discharge line in the isolation valve or clogged discharge strainers and/or pipework.
