Aproud tiadition Lunenburg County Christmas Tree Producers Association marks half-century milestone

Balsam fir thrives on cutover woodlands in Nova Scotia. With its lush, aromatic foliage, this species is the Christmas tree of choice throughout much of North America. By the 1950s, long before sophisticated marketing strategies were launched to fendoff competition from plastic facsimiles, annual Christmas tree exports from Nova Scotia exceeded 3.5 million, and half of those trees came from Lunenburg County. Growing conditions were particularly favourable in this part of the province, and the industry took root in the rural economy. Eventually, growers in the area formed an organization to further their collective interests. That group- the Lunenburg County Christmas Tree Producers Association (LCCTPA) -marked its 50th anniversary in 2017, and members gathered on Sept. 23 to celebrate the milestone.
