摘要

By the end of the 19th century, more than 1,000 sawmills were reported to be operating in Nova Scotia. The majority were small operations, producing lumber for personal or community use - though some had an annual output of thousands of board feet, and sold to a wider market, perhaps as part of an export business. But few sawmills in the province had a yearly capacity in excess of one million board feet. The Davison Lumber Company could have ended up as a footnote to the industrial history of Nova Scotia, if not for the initiative of early pioneers and the entrepreneurial spirit of Edward D. Davison. Davison and his three sons turned the town of Bridgewater, on Nova Scotia's South Shore, into a busy commercial centre that shipped lumber products to a global market. The empire they created was known around the world.
