What is the ideal breed of sheep? Answering this question requires knowing what is expected of the sheep, as well as the strengths and weaknesses inherent in different breeds. This includes their propensity to develop their own expectations and culture of resistance or compliance. At Rustaret, our grassland farm in Shamrock, Prince Edward Island, we want sheep that can make their living outdoors, sometimes sharing pasture with our cattle or grazing rough pasture recently cleared from the woods, and always astute about predators, particularly coyotes. As well, we want sheep that are low maintenance - no shearing, minimal need for wormers or other medications -and that can produce and raise lambs on pasture and hay alone, every year.
