Japan adds to support for LNG-fuelled ships

The Japanese environment and transport ministries have teamed up to encourage construction of more LNG-fuelled vessels under a subsidy programme designed to find the best available control technologies to optimise engine and LNG fuelling efficiency. The two ministries on 24 April began to seek participants for the subsidy programme, which will collect performance data from operational LNG-fuelled vessels. Successful applicants will receive funds covering up to half of the cost to build a new LNG-fuelled ship, or to install necessary equipment, such as a dualfuel engine, LNG tank and LNG fuelling system. The ministries have a budget of ￥280mn ($2.6mn) for the first year of the three-year programme, which will run until 31 March 2021.
