Japan’s LnG sector faces state of emergency

A state of emergency in Japan announced on 7 April in response to the Covid-19 pandemic is unlikely to afect the country’s LNG import operations, with power and gas utilities to continue working to ensure stable supplies despite expected weaker demand. The state of emergency, calling for people to stay at home if possible, covers seven prefectures — Tokyo, Osaka, Kanagawa, Chiba, Saitama, Hyogo and Fukuoka — from midnight on 8 April until 6 May. Governors of the seven designated prefectures will have the authority to impose tougher quarantine measures. As well as residents staying home, schools, shops and restaurants will close.
