Binocular object: Kemble's Cascade

The constellation Camelopardalis, the Giraffe, occupies a seemingly empty part of the sky, with few bright stars to signal its presence. On early autumn evenings, it can be seen rising in the north-eastern sky to reach a healthy altitude by 10pm. One thing it has going for it is Kemble s Cascade,an asterism (a chance alignment of stars not physically connected) consisting of a virtually straight line of 17, white, seventh- and eighth-magnitude stars running north-west to south-east for about 2.5 degrees (about half the field of view of 10x50 binoculars). Midway along this line is fifth-magnitude star SAO 12969.
