Disappearing MAGINUS AND DESLANDRES Giants

Acursory look at the full or near-full Moon not only reveals the familiar features of the'man in the Moon', but also provides us with a fundamental lesson in lunar geology. The darker areas that make up the'face'are extensive plains of basaltic lavas that once erupted onto the lunar surface to form the maria, or'seas'. The brighter areas, however, are highlands, much more ancient and consisting of anorthositic rock that formed the Moon's original crust.
