Advantages of the gravimetric control of bulk material flows: Illustrated with the example of the bunker discharge control at Walheim limestone quarry

Taking the control of the bunker discharge for high-grade limestone chippings at the limestone quarryin Walheim operated by the German firm Teerbau GmbH as an example, in this article, the authorsoutline the economic and product-specific advantages the gravimetric control of bulk material flows,with the help of a PID-controlled belt scale, can bring for the operational result. In the example cited,in addition to an improvement in the quality of the high-grade chippings, a production increase ofalmost 15 % could be achieved after installation of the new equipment. At an average market price ofDM 15.00 per tonne for high-grade chippings and with the additional output of 100 tonnes per day,the investment for a belt scale system pays off within an extremely short time. The installation of beltscales in existing belt conveyor systems poses no major problems and can be undertaken without anygreat expense.
