FARMERS' ADAPTATION TO CLIMATE CHANGE IN THE TENGGER MOUNTAINS (CASE STUDY IN NGADAS VILLAGE, PONCOKUSUMO DISTRICT, MALANG REGENCY, EAST JAVA,INDONESIA)

The data of Statistics Central Bureau of Malang Regency Year 2010-2015 shows a decline in potato production in PoncokusomoDistrict. Climate change has caused a decline in production and encouraged farmers to adapt. This study is aimed to describe farmer's knowledge and adaptation strategies against climate change. The data were processed using descriptive analysis and logistic regression test Respondents of this research are 85 farmers of Ngadas Village determined by purposive sampling. The results show that 1) Potato farmers in NgadasVillage feel the climate change through the parameters of climate change; that is the change in season, a drop in temperature and wind speed slowdown. However, farmers who know and understand climate change are still in a small number. Farmers feel the impacts of climate change, such as landslides and the increase of water availability; 2) Potato farmers in Ngadas Village are in the stage of adjustment to climate change that has occurred today. The choice of adaptation taken by farmers is to change the time of planting, and 3) The factors that have an influence on the decision of potato farmersin Ngadas Village to adapt are education, access to climate information, land ownership and intuition.
