The emergence of drug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii is widespread due to the non-efficacy of the currently available antibiotics over the last two decades. Therefore, there is an urgent requirement for screening of novel antibacterial compound. Insuch emerging condition, plants with therapeutic efficacy has drawn much attention towards antimicrobial properties. The objective of this study was to investigate the antimicrobial activity of flavonoids isolated from seeds of Pongamia pinnata Linn against carbapenem resistant Acinetobacter baumannii. Total Flavonoids content was determined and tested on clinical isolates of Acinetobacter baumannii along with the standard ATCC strain (19606) using Agar well Diffusion method. The tested flavonoids exhibited potential antibacterial action against the clinical isolates and standard strain of Acinetobacter baumannii with flavonoids concentration ranging from 1-10 mg. To conclude, the flavonoids isolated from Pongamia pinnata seeds were found effective against the drug resistant gram negative Acinetobacter baumannii organism. This unique observation laid foundation for further research to evaluate safety and therapeutic benefit of this phytochemical compound.
