Key View: Taiwan’s LNG imports will continue to grow strongly over the coming years. This will be driven by the government’s growing need for gas and renewables generation to fll the power gap created by denuclearisation. Taiwan is among a host of countries in the Asia-Pacifc region that are planning the transition to cleaner energy sources, as part of a broader move to cut emissions and improve domestic air quality. Indeed, Taiwan's long-term power generation targets (published in 2016) call for the combined share of natural gas and renewables to be increased to 70.0% of the total power mix by 2025 from 37.0% currently, in contrast to substantial contractions for coal and nuclear. Due to negligible and rapidly declining domestic production, and lack of access to an international pipeline network, Taiwan’s growing need for gas will need to be met via LNG.
