An alternative crossbar for controlling postoperative hip rotation.

A modified cast boot with a rotation bar can be used to control postoperative hip rotation, thereby reducing the incidence of further dislocation.1 A broom handle or other piece of dowel has traditionally been utilised as the rigid template for the cross-bar. Broom handles or pieces of doweling are not generally freely available in theatre. Fibreglass casting tape can be twisted around itself to form a solid bar. The fibreglass bar can be attached to a removable cast boot and control rotation of the hip joint in a simple and cost-effective manner (Fig. 1).
