Eastern Us coal trains slow while demand dips

Eastern US railroads are hauling Appalachian coal at a slower pace, even as volume declines amid lower electricity demand. Utilities have not complained about delays, likely because most have no desire to take coal at a faster pace. Some gen- erators have parked trains to reduce deliveries. In the past, trains sometimes slowed in late spring because utilities are still wrapping up shoulder season maintenance, or simply be- cause of capacity constraints related to increased rail traffic.
