Major US railroads collected revenue of $1.5bn in demurrage and other fees from shippers last year, up by 4.7pc from 2018, despite a widespread drop in freight volume. The Class I railroads last month filed fourth quarter 2019 demurrage and accessorial fee data with the Surface Trans- portation Board (STB). The agency has been monitoring the charges after shipper complaints increased in late 2018 follow- ing wider implementation of the precision scheduled railroad- ing operating model. The seven Class I railroads in 2019 collected combined de- murrage and accessorial fee revenue of $1.5bn, up by $67.5mn compared with $1.4bn in the prior year.
