Polish utilities increase biomass burn in 1H

Polish utilities PGE and Energa both reported an increase in their biomass burn in the frst half of 2019, as high EU ETS prices encouraged biomass burn over coal. State-controlled PGE, Poland’s largest electricity producer, burned 283,000t of biomass in the frst six months of 2019, up by 9.7pc on the year, it said this week. PGE’s key biomass-dedicated asset is its 76MW Szczecin combined heat and power (CHP) plant. It also co-fres biomass at several other plants.
