Thailand's wood pellet exports jumped to 130,200 t in 2017, a rise of 83pc from 21,700 t in 2016, driven by strong South Korean demand. Thailand supplied 128,900 t of wood pellets — 99pc of exports — to South Korea last year. Exports to South Korea rose by almost 89pc from 14,300 t in 2016. Wood pellet demand in South Korea soared, because the country's state-controlled utilities issued tenders for over 2mn t of woody biomass pellets for delivery last year. And South Korean demand is expected to grow further to 3.8mn-3.9mn t this year, largely because of the start of biomass co-firing operations by independent power producers.
