Biomass emissions from co-firing will be counted towards a limit set by the UK government today as part of its plan to end unabated coal-fired power generation by 2025. The UK government published a final response to its consultation today on ending unabated coal-fired power generation by 2025, and has chosen the option to limit CO2 emissions to 450g/kWh electricity produced, rather than a proposal to fit carbon capture storage technology to existing plants. The emissions limit will be applied on a unit by unit basis. “Emissions from other fuels co-fired with solid fossil fuel will be included in the calculations for emission intensity,” the government's department for business, energy and industrial strategy Beis said. Biomass co-firing with coal at "relatively high levels" would allow generators to meet the emissions intensity limit, it said.
