China heating plan offers biomass boost

The Chinese government wants as much as 70pc of winter residential heating in Beijing, Tianjin and 26 other cities in the northern provinces of Hebei, Shanxi, Henan and Shandong to be derived from cleaner energy sources such as biomass, LNG and solar energy by 2021. The strategy, which is aimed at tackling pollution by phasing out coal-fired heating, is outlined in the government’s Northern Region Winter Clean Energy Heating Plan for 2017-21. The heating policy also applies to suburban and rural areas governed by these municipalities. Coal currently makes up 83pc of fuel used in residential winter heating applications across the 28 cities and their municipal areas.
