Finland's Naantali woodchip CHP ramps up

Finland's Turku Regional Energy (TSE), a subsidiary of Finnish utility Fortum, has begun commercial operations at its Naantali biomass co-firing combined heat and power plant. The plant can generate 400 GWh/yr of district heat and 200 GWh/yr of process steam, as well as 800 GWh/yr of power. It will consume wood chips and co-fire 45pc biomass — chiefly locally sourced wood chips — alongside coal and around 4pc peat in 2018, rising to 60-70pc biomass in 2019 after a conveyor system is built.
