Hungary introduces new support for biomass

The Hungarian government has introduced the previously delayed 'brown premiums' to encourage existing biomass and biogas plants to continue production instead of closing down or switching to fossil fuels after their current feed-in tariff contracts expire. The subsidy was originally scheduled to be an element of the country's new renewable support system, which mostly replaced feed-in tariffs as of 1 January this year. But its introduction was delayed because the European Commission had not yet approved the overall support plan. The commission approved the programme in July, which allowed the Hungarian government to finally add brown premiums to the scheme last week.
