Heating drives Europe's 2016 pellet consumption

European wood pellet consumption rose by 12.6pc to 22.4mn t in 2016, European Pellet Council general manager Gilles Gauthier told the WPAC conference in Ottawa, Canada, today. The heating market continued to account for the lion's share of consumption, with over 60pc of pellet consumption dedicated to generating heat, through commercial biomass appliances, heat generation from wood pellet-fuelled combined heat and power plants and pellet use in homes, Gauthier said. European wood pellet consumption for heating rose by 8.2pc to 13.4mn t last year, data from European wood pellet association Aebiom show. Residential heat use accounted for 41 pc of all wood pellet consumption in Europe last year, Gauthier said.
