BP to cease Gelsenkirchen bitumen production

BP has said it is ending its European bitumen sales operations, as it will close its only bitumen-producing unit at the 265,000 b/d Gelsenkirchen refinery in northwest Germany by the end of this year. "The rationale behind this decision is to simplify structures and create resources for core tasks within the company", BP said in an email to clients. The firm said that it had already stated its intention at the end of last year that it would end its European sales of bitumen "from various sites in 2018 and focus our business activities on fewer sites".
