What's the Value of a Safety Program?

This article is not a how-to on safe work practices. Rather, my hope is to encourage readers to feel better about their existing programs, and to expand their programs' reach. Better yet, I would like to encourage readers to expand their programs to communicate beyond their organizations walls and engage with individuals at companies who may not have a safety program at all.In the United States, many companies started a safe-work-practices program as a reaction to the OSHA mandate (1971) for employers to have a program in place to ensure a safe work environment; this in lieu of subsequent inspections and their resulting fines, among other things. However, the benefits and reasons for a safety program are much deeper and more meaningful than that.
