A random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to detect genetic markers in cultured and wild shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) from Mexico is described. Samples A and C were obtained from hatcheries in the Tastiota and La Paz reas, respectively, while sample B was obtained from the Kino Bay hatchery. The wild sample originated from La Cruz. 34 loci were obtained and 68% were polymorphic. Polymorphism in the wild sample was similar to samples A and C, while B had the lowest value. The number of alleles and genetic diversity showed similar patterns. The overall genetic differentiation index was 0.55 and gene flow was less than 1 organism per generation. There was a high genetic identity and low genetic distance between samples A and B. The wild sample was distinct from the others. A genetic marker was detected with primer OPA10 for sample C as a DNA band of 210 bp. This band was present in 95% of shrimps in sample C but was absent in the other samples. This marker could be useful in order to identify strains with high performance and protect against unauthorized reproduction and culture of lineages.
