AUTOMOTIVE/Passenger airbag housing

Quadrant Creative Moulding & Systems NV (Quadrant CMS), Belgium, working in close cooperation with Tier-1 automotive supplier Autoliv, has developed a polymer passenger airbag housing for the new Fiat 500 automobile. The housing is moulded in impact-modified polyamidc 6 (PA 6; brand name: Akulon) with 40 percent glass-fibre reinforcement. (See also, image on page 1.) According to the company, polymer airbag housings are becoming a common choice in the automotive industry as an alternative to metal, as they provide weight saving and lower cost-of-manufacture. Also, each automobile model requires a housing that has been specifically designed for its build.
