Chromogranin A (CGA), also known as parathyroid secretory protein 1, is a 48kDa glycoprotein, which together with chromogranin B and other secretogranins constitutes the granin family of neuroendocrine secretory proteins. CGA is an acidic protein found in dense-core neurosecretory granules of neuroendocrine cells and neurons. The function of CGA is debated but evidence shows that CGA molecules act as prohormones, which are fragmented to form peptides (vasostatin 1 and 2, pan-creastatin, and parastatin among others) with auto, para, and endocrine functions.1 In addition, CGA binds calcium and catecholamines within secretory vesicles.
