Resin reduces paint defects

US resin-maker AOC LLC and parts moulder ThyssenKrupp Budd Co, Troy, Michigan, have jointly developed a new resin for sheet moulding compounds (SMCs) with improved surface characteristics. The new formulation, Atryl TCA, provides a 50 percent reduction in surface waviness and a 69 percent increase in toughness when compared with traditional SMC surfaces, AOC states. This combination of properties is said to reduce paint defects by 90 percent or more by resisting microcracking during demould and retaining crack-resistant characteristics after moulding. The product is said to resist microcracking even along critical edge lines.
