Screening of field pea varieties for rice-fallow areas under organic management conditions in NE Himalayas

An experiment was conducted in 2015-2016 to study the performance of different varieties of field pea in rice-fallow under organic management in mid hills of Sikkim. Eight varieties were evaluated viz., HUDP -15, Adarsh, Aman, Vikash, Prakash, IPFD 6-3,IPFD 11-5 and VL-42. The observed parameters were significantly different among these varieties and Prakash took the minimum number of days to reach 50% flowering (67 days) followed by Adarsh (68 days). Among all varieties, the maximum plant height was recorded in VL-42 (156.7 cm) followed by Adarsh and Aman with height of 141.9 cm and 129.9 cm, respectively. The variety Aman recorded maximum number of pods/plant (14.70) followed by Adarsh and VL-42 with 12.60 and 12.20 pods/plant, respectively. A comparison of the varieties in means of pod length indicated that Aman exhibited maximum pod length (5.60 cm) followed by HUDP-15 (5.47 cm). Early maturing varieties were Aman (122 days), Adarsh and Prakash (124 days) and VL-42 (126 days). Maximum seed yield(1555.56 kg/ha) was recorded in Aman followed by Vikash and VL-42 with seed yield of 1327.49 and 1315.79 kg/ha, respectively.
