Post flood impact on fishing community of district Bandipora Kashmir valley

Fishing community is among the most vulnerable section of the society that gets affected during the natural calamities especially flood. The present investigation was an attempt to ascertain the impact of one of the most devastating floods in recent times in the history of Kashmir valley on the lives of the fishers living on the banks of Wular lake of Kashmir valley. The study was conducted in three fishing villages viz. Laharwalpora, Lankrishipora and Kulhama in the district Bandipora. Data were collected using pre-tested interview schedule carrying information on various aspects pertaining to loss of property, gear, craft and health related issues etc. Results revealed that fishers had faced not only materialistic loss but also psycolological trauma.They were left clueless as to how to combat such critical situation. There was almost no support from government or any other agency as they were found to be themselves unprepared for the disaster. The results of the study provide an in-depth detail regarding the hurdles encountered by fishers during the floods.
