Identification of Trichomes on Aromatic and Non-aromatic Local Rice Varieties and their Resistance to the Brown Planthopper

Planting of local rice varieties, both aromatic and non-aromatic, may lead to increase pest problems, especially brown planthoppers, Nilaparvata lugens (Stal). Therefore, the resistance of local rice varieties to brown planthopper needs to be clearlyunderstood. In this study, the leaf sheath trichomes of 10 different local aromatic and non-aromatic rice varieties were identified. All of the local rice varieties were also evaluated against planthopper's population under field conditions. We found that the density of leaf sheath trichomes may be related to non-aromatic local rice varieties, but the trichomes were not different from the resistant variety IR 64. The highest average density of leaf sheath trichomes was found on the non-aromatic varieties Beras Hitam and Merah Slegreng, while the lowest was found on the aromatic variety Menthik Susu. The average population of brown planthopper on both aromatic and non-aromatic local rice varieties was higher than on the resistant variety IR 64. The varieties Merah Klaten and Padi Hitam (non-aromatic) expressed more resistance, while the Menthik Susu and Rojolele (aromatic) varieties were found to be more susceptible to brown planthopper than the other varieties.
