The British Plastics Federation (BFP) and the Worshipful Company of Homers have awarded the 2013 Homers Award for Plastics Innovation and Design to GKN Aerospace for its development of the carbon fibre rear wing spar for the Airbus A350 XWB. Each 27-m long rear spar is manufactured in three sections and forms the structural heart of the fixed trailing edge (FTE) on each wing. The spar attaches vital parts, including the main landing gear, to the wing.
