A novel latent acid catalyst can cut energy requirements and improve both yield and storage stability in the manufacture of resole-based sheet moulding compounds (SMCs), according to research carried out by Bac2 of Southampton, UK. Despite their superior fire properties, phenolic resole-based SMCs are not commonly used as they are difficult to store and process effectively.
