A method for producing composite laminates in a variety of different colours has been developed by Apple Inc of Cupertino, California, USA. Apple says that while the strength and low weight of carbon fibre-reinforced plastics make them suitable for use in the housings of its electronic devices, they are not aesthetically pleasing. The composites are typically black and the carbon fibres they contain are usually visible on their surfaces. Further, the fibres are variable in the construction-resulting in cosmetic imperfections on the surface of the composite and a 'tired, unexciting' appearance.
