A hybrid self-reinforced composite (SRC), comprising a thermoplastic matrix reinforced with ductile thermoplastic and brittle fibres, is being developed by researchers at KU Leuven in Belgium and the University of Leeds in the UK. According to the researchers, the composite - described in International Patent Publication 2013/190149 - is strong and stiff, but also demonstrates high strain-to-failure-enabling it to absorb lots of energy in the event of a crash.
