Carbon fibre precursor production begins for BMW's Megacity vehicle

MRC SGL Precursor (MSP) Co Ltd - a joint venture between Mitsubishi Rayon Co (MRC) Ltd and SGL Group - has started production of polyacry-lonitrile (PAN)-based precursor, which will be used to manufacture carbon fibres for use in BMW's Megacity vehicle. The precursor, manufactured by MSP in Otake, Japan, will be converted into carbon fibres in Moses Lake, Washington, USA, where a plant with an annual capacity of approximately 3000 t is being built (see also, May 2010 issue, BMW and SGL boost carbon fibre use in automobiles, p.4). Production at the plant is scheduled to start in the third quarter of 2011.
