Nonwoven fabrics have become a vital component in clothing, home furnishings, health care, engineering, industrial and consumer goods on an everyday basis. Although blood transfusion is important to save lives, the existence of white blood cells (WBCs) is dangerous and risky during clinical transfusion, because WBC in blood will transfer viruses during the transfusion. Hence, it is necessary to transfuse blood with little or no WBC, which has led to development of melt-blown nonwovens, an excellent material for blood filtration. Melt-blown polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) nonwovens are probably regarded as one of the best materials to remove WBC from blood due to its peculiar structure, performancerandlow cost. However, the wettability of this material is poor, resulting in low effective filtration of WBCs in the permeation of blood.
